M-DCPS STUDENTS WINNERS AT TWO INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE COMPETITIONS

Six Miami-Dade County Public Schools students were winners of the recent Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Portland, Ore. Over 1,400 students from 38 countries competed for $3 million in awards.

Alexandra Marraccini of MAST Academy won a first place award of $3,000 and a medallion from the United States Army for her project Close Primes and RSA Selection Procedures.

Reshma Ramachandran of Coral Reef Senior High School won a $3,000 first place award in the Medicine and Health category for her project Immunostimulating Properties of a Herbal Polysaccharide from Tinospora cordifolla for Biodense Treatment. She was also awarded an $8,000 Naval Research Award from the United States Navy/Marine Corps and a second place $500 bond from Ashtavadhani Ambiti, Subbaraya Chetty Foundation.

Parijata Mackey of Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School won a fourth place $500 award in the Biochemistry category for her project An Evaluation of the Effects of Temperature Increase and High Energy Photon Beams on Drosophila melanogaster.

Monica Simo of MAST Academy won a fourth place $500 award in the Earth and Space Science category for her project The Effect of Tropical Cyclones on Global Tropical Rainfall.

Jennifer Ledon won an Honorable Mention Award Certificate from the American Psychological Association for her project Neurochemical and Behavioral Effects of Nicotine and Cocaine on Periadolescent and Adult Rats.

Lisha Constantine of American Senior High School won the NASA Certificate Award for her project Characterization of a Truncated Form of Slow Skeletal Troponin T that Causes Nemaline Myopathy.

In a separate competition, four district students participated in the recent International Bridge Building contest in Baltimore. Gabriel Hernandez of Southwest Miami Senior High School received second place and John Fregeolle of Miami Coral Park Senior High School placed fourth. Julian Cotero of Miami Senior High School placed 23rd and Kevin Pan of Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School placed 34th. Bridge Awards were determined by the efficiency of the bridge.
