M-DCPS PARTNERSHIP PAYS OFF FOR STUDENTS IN AUTOMOTIVE PROGRAM

Graduation brings more than jobs to 26 students from Miami Lakes Educational Center

September 9, 2004

A partnership between Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Southeast Toyota and Lexus Southern Area has paid off for 26 Miami Lakes Educational Center students, with their recent graduation from the Automotive Service Technician and Collision Repair Technician programs.

The students are part of the Toyota Technical Educational Network (T-TEN) program, a two-year course that combines schooling at Miami Lakes Educational Center with cooperative training by Toyota and Lexus dealers in South Florida. The program answers the rising demand for qualified automotive technicians nationwide. Its goal is to increase the number of certified technicians by 75 percent in the next five years.

In addition to gaining much-needed work experience, each graduate received a tool set valued at $2,500, as well as $1,000 for expenses from the Toyota and Lexus dealers.

Toyota and Lexus representatives, school administrators, teachers, and relatives of the graduates attended the ceremony at Don Shula's Hotel & Golf Club.
