THREE THINGS PARENTS CAN DO TO BE ACTIVE IN THEIR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION

August 11, 2004

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) offers parents many ways to be actively involved in their children's education throughout the school year. These three suggestions are a good way to get started:

  • Join your school's PTA, which usually meets once a month and usually costs only $5 to join.

  • Volunteer in your child's classroom. This sends a message to your children that their education is important to you.

  • Use the support services offered by the two brand-new parent resource centers at the North Miami Beach and South Kendall campuses of Nova Southeastern University. The centers offer training activities, support groups and referral networks throughout the year. The skills you learn here will help you be an active stakeholder in your child's education.

M-DCPS has an advocacy director in each of its six ACCESS Centers who can help parents play a greater role in their children's schooling. Parents can also contact Dr. Yvonne Lim-Peterson of the Parent ACCESS District Office at 305-995-2680.
