SCHOOL DISTRICT MAKES A PUSH FOR SCIENCE MIAMI – Science is in the spotlight at Miami-Dade County Public Schools for a very good reason–this is the first year that students’ science scores will be used to determine their schools’ performance grades. Students in grades 5, 8 and 11 will be asked to show their knowledge in four areas: Nature of Science, Biological and Life Sciences, Physical and Chemical Sciences and Earth/Space Science. “Science is important because it provides a foundation for so many of today’s technical and scientific careers. We hear from industry of the increasing need for students who are well-educated in science, and we are emphasizing how important it is for students to have a deep understanding of science,” said Dr. Cyd Heyliger-Browne, the District’s Administrative Director for Science. Science will be on display at Southland Mall, 20505 South Dixie Highway, from Jan. 29 to Feb. 2 during Science Focus Week. On Tuesday, Jan. 30, the District Science Fair for Secondary Schools will take place at the mall, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a continuous program on the Mall Stage (near Dillards). The program includes the following:
Ivan Yaeger is a proud graduate of Miami Central Senior High School. While in school, he was fascinated with the television program The Six Million Dollar Man, and developed a prosthetic arm as a science project. Mr. Yaeger’s school project eventually turned into his career, and he now develops prosthetics professionally. ### 07-FMN/084/jjs |
