ON DISPLAY AT CORAL GABLES CITY HALL

MIAMI – A photography exhibit featuring the work of students from Shenandoah Middle School will be on display in the downstairs lobby of the Coral Gables City Hall, 405 Biltmore Way, throughout the month of March as part of Dade Heritage Days. The city will present each student with a certificate at a reception at City Hall on Thursday, March 1, at 6:30 p.m.

Students in 7th grade civics classes from Shenandoah Middle, a Museum Magnet School, have worked under a partnership with Dade Heritage Trust. As part of the museums’ programs and under the direction of their teacher, Terri Herrera, students attended a study trip around the City of Coral Gables. They were given the project of photographing various historical sites, and then were asked to create a brochure designed for kids visiting the city. Students researched the historical sights and gave a presentation highlighting the importance of preserving them.

Shenandoah Middle School has forged strong partnerships with local area museums and cultural institutions in Miami-Dade County - the Dade Heritage Trust Program, Historical Museum of Southern Florida, Lowe Art Museum, Miami Art Museum, Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium, and The Wolfsonian-FIU - to develop Florida’s first museums magnet program. Museum educators work with teachers to combine curriculum with the objects and artifacts in their respective museums. This integrated curriculum emphasizes problem-solving, communication, exploration, invention, and inquiry through visits to their museum and cultural partners. Shenandoah Middle School is partially funded through a three-year, multi-million dollar project awarded from The U.S. Department of Education Magnet Schools Assistance Program.

Shenandoah Middle School is located at 1950 S.W. 19th Street. For more information, contact Maria Jimenez, Magnet Lead Teacher at (305) 505-5341.
