JOAN SHARPERSON, AN INSPIRING TEACHER OF THE YEAR

IT TAKES… COURAGE

M-DCPS Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week, May 7-11

It takes courage to be an inspiring teacher, to motivate, to care and above all else, to make learning accessible to all. Joan Sharperson, an 18-year educator, is that teacher. Earlier this year, she was honored as the Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year.

The Week of May 7-11 is Teacher Appreciation Week, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will celebrate Sharperson and its more than 21,000 teachers with the It Takes…Courage poster, which features all the Teacher of the Year Finalists.

As a fourth-grade mathematics and science teacher at Joella C. Good Elementary, Sharperson uses a variety of resources to conduct hands-on and minds-on learning experiences for her students. She fosters a classroom environment that helps students think critically, and become engaged, on-task and highly motivated active learners. Sharperson’s classroom is filled with high energy. Whether doing a science experiment or mathematical game, she captures the attention of all of her students.

“I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank teachers for the difference they are making everyday,” said M-DCPS Superintendent Rudy Crew.
