LAURENCE E. AXTELL, AN IMAGINATIVE INSTRUCTOR Take an imaginative instructor with a repertoire of instructional practices that make learning relevant and exciting, add a dash of engaging debates and meaningful projects and blend in the use of literary genres: the result is Laurence E. Axtell’s dynamic Social Studies classroom at Miami Northwestern Senior High. The Week of May 7-11 is Teacher Appreciation Week, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will celebrate Axtell and its more than 21,000 teachers with the It Takes…Courage poster, which features all the Teacher of the Year Finalists. A teacher for 11 years and a Teacher-of-the-Year finalist, Axtell, who teaches African American History, American History and Creative Writing Enrichment, wants his students to become critical thinkers who are capable of understanding, rationalizing and contributing to the dialogue of this nation and our world. “I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank teachers for the difference they are making everyday,” said M-DCPS Superintendent Rudy Crew. # # # The It Takes… Courage poster features Teacher of the Year Joan Sharperson, Joella C. Good Elementary School; Runner-up Catherine Conkling-Wagner, Miami Killian Senior High School; Finalist Laurence Axtell, Miami Northwestern Senior High School; Finalist Susan Green, Dr. Michael M.
