MEGHAN HAUPTLI, FOSTERS A LIFE-LONG LOVE OF READING Meghan Hauptli brings the world to her students at MAST Academy everyday with her experiences of having lived and learned in such countries as Cameroon, West Africa; Dijon, France; and Kumamoto, Japan. Her abundance of knowledge motivates, empowers and engages her 9th grade English students to become lifelong learners. The Week of May 7-11 is Teacher Appreciation Week, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will celebrate Hauptli and its more than 21,000 teachers with the It Takes…Courage poster, which features all the Teacher of the Year Finalists. As an English teacher, Hauptli is always promoting literacy and passing on her infectious love of literature, which has inspired her students to read and devour books with gusto. She makes assignments relevant to students by incorporating letter-writing campaigns and dramatic performances into their class work. “I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank teachers for the difference they are making everyday,” said M-DCPS Superintendent Rudy Crew. # # # The It Takes… Courage poster features Teacher of the Year Joan Sharperson, Joella C.
