MIAMI-DADE TEACHER WINS FIRST PLACE IN
FEDERAL RESERVE BANK LESSON PLAN CONTEST

Kevin Maldonado of John A. Ferguson Senior High received a $1,000 savings bond for his first place win in the Lesson Plan of the Year contest recently held by the Miami Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Three other finalists were Daniel Vinat of Felix Varela Senior High, Alan Melchior of MAST Academy, and Tanya Hanson of South Dade Senior High.

Designed to introduce educators to Federal Reserve materials and resources, the contest challenged middle and high school teachers to develop lesson plans featuring Federal Reserve publications, Web sites or multimedia materials. Maldonado’s lesson plan, “An Introduction to the Federal Reserve,” featured the Federal Reserve’s video “In Plan English” and focused on Federal Open Market Committee actions.

“We are truly proud of these four teachers who creatively thought outside the box and used the amazing resources of the Federal Reserve to promote financial literacy,” said Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Rudy Crew. “These teachers are an inspiration to their students, as well as other teachers.”

Judges, comprised of Federal Reserve staff and educators, evaluated each entry on certain criteria, including originality, creativity, documentation and use of Federal Reserve materials. The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta serves the Sixth Federal Reserve District, which encompasses Alabama, Florida, Georgia and parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.
