MIAMI-DADE STUDENTS GET CONTRACT OFFER

MIAMI – Eighty-five Miami-Dade County Public School (M-DCPS) middle and high school students are preparing for their big day.  On Thursday, May 31, 2007, they will sign a contract with Take Stock in Children at Miami-Dade College Wolfson Campus,  stating they will stay in school, maintain good grades, remain crime and drug free, and meet one-hour each week with a mentor.  In exchange, the students receive a four-year college tuition scholarship.

The mentorship component of Take Stock in Children is key to the success of the program.  A mentor serves not as a tutor or disciplinarian, but as a friend and role model.

“The fact of the matter is we cannot provide these deserving children with scholarships unless we have mentors who are willing to also do their part to ensure the success of these students,” said Alejandro Alvarez, Program Director.  “Our program serves as a solution to overcoming child poverty, academic failure, youth crime in our community, and our mentors play a big role in that.”

There are currently more than 400 M-DCPS students enrolled in Take Stock in Children.

Take Stock in Children of Miami-Dade is a non-profit organization that provides empowerment services to underprivileged youth in middle and high school.  For more information on Take Stock in Children or to volunteer as a mentor visit www.takestockinchildren.com or call 305-237-3952.
