WHY: |
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony artist Xavier Cortada will share a motivational talk with more than 125 children from the Park’s after school program. Other activities include a student essay contest winner announcement and a Read-to-Me session with Cortada.
Community Reading Corners are public spaces (non-traditional) that are turned into reading centers with books, chairs, and pillows. There are currently 15 reading corners located in eight target communities of Florida City, Hialeah, Homestead, Liberty City, Little Haiti, Little Havana, Miami Gardens and Overtown.
Reading in Progress is a partnership between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Houghton Mifflin, which seeks to inspire children to make time to read every day. It fosters a supportive environment for readers while involving parents, businesses, community leaders and celebrity role models. |
