MIAMI-DADE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS SHOW IMPRESSIVE GAINS IN FCAT MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, READING SCORES SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT ZONE STUDENTS ALSO SHOW PROGRESS MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools middle school students showed strong gains in mathematics, science and reading on the Spring 2007 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), according to results released today by the Florida Department of Education. Miami-Dade’s Grade 7 students outpaced other Grade 7 students in the state in mathematics, and Grade 8 students increased their science scores by six percent. In reading, Miami-Dade’s Grade 7 students tripled the gains made by other Grade 7 students in the state. Students in the School Improvement Zone continued to make academic progress. Students increased both reading and mathematics scores since last year at all grade levels tested, 3 through 10. District-wide, the percentages of students scoring in the higher achievement levels increased at all three grades tested for science (Grades 5, 8 and 11) from 2006 to 2007. The percentage of students in elementary, middle and senior high grades scoring in the higher achievement levels in mathematics also increased year-over-year. In reading, the percentage of students in middle and senior high grades remained stable compared to last year, while that of elementary students declined slightly. Additional reports of district and school-level trends as well as disaggregated reports by curriculum group and demographic characteristics will be transmitted to the Board and posted online as they become available. In addition, parents may access their child(ren)’s results using unique passwords via the FCAT Parent Network at www.fcatparentnetwork.com.
