20 M-DCPS STUDENTS EARN THEIR SHARE MIAMI – The Broad Foundation announced today that it has awarded 20 Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) high school seniors a collective $125,000 in Broad Prize college scholarships. M-DCPS received the scholarship money as a finalist for the 2006 Broad Prize for Urban Education. The District is a finalist for the 2007 award as well, which guarantees that next year’s graduating seniors will receive a minimum of $125,000 in scholarships. The scholarships were awarded after a national education panel visited M-DCPS to gather information to assist prominent national leaders, including former governors, U.S. Secretaries of Education and CEOs as they decide whether M-DCPS will win this year’s overall Broad Prize for Urban Education, worth an additional $500,000 in scholarships. M-DCPS is one of five finalists for this year’s award. The winner will be announced on September 18, 2007 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Unlike many traditional scholarships that are awarded to top-tier students, Broad Prize scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who have demonstrated continuous improvement with grades over the course of their high school career and have financial need. The Broad Foundation is a Los Angeles-based venture philanthropic organization established in 1999 by Eli and Edythe Broad. The Foundation’s mission is to dramatically improve K-12 urban public education through better governance, management, labor relations and competition. The following 20 seniors were selected from Miami-Dade schools to receive Broad Prize scholarships:
