M-DCPS TO HOST “READING IS HOT” RALLY AT
AMERICAN AIRLINES ARENA

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) presents its 2nd Annual Reading Rally on Monday, Sept. 17, at the American Airlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Blvd., from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Under the theme “Reading is Hot,” more than 10,000 elementary school students will participate in the rally designed to encourage young readers to spend more time reading. The rally will be an opportunity for students to cheer for their favorite books and book characters. Students will also answer questions regarding literacy and reading from community dignitaries, including Pam Giganti, of the local NBC affiliate, Channel 6. Some of the other expected guests include Burnie from the Miami Heat, the Heat Dancers and X-Treme Team, as well as reading icons, Curious George and Reader Rabbit.

At the rally, students will pledge to read daily to increase the power of words in their lives every day.  They will also hear excerpts from The Story of Ferdinand, written by Munro Leaf. The event is Miami-Dade’s pre-event kick-off to Jumpstart’s 2007 Read for the Record campaign, which is scheduled to take place on September 20 in elementary schools, public libraries, community centers and homes all across the country. The purpose of the campaign is to break the world record for the most individuals reading the same book in a single day, and to raise public awareness about the importance of early childhood literacy.
