PARENT ACADEMY, EARLY CHILDHOOD INITIATIVE FOUNDATION PRESENT The Parent Academy and The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation are hosting a family learning event and signature lecture for parents, Help Your Child Learn to Read: The Five Essential Elements of Early Literacy, on Friday, October 26, 5 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., at the Miami Science Museum, 3280 South Miami Avenue, Miami. Former U.S. Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, Dr. Susan B. Neuman, will speak with parents about their role as their child’s first language and literacy teacher. “Children develop early literacy skills through active engagement,” said Dr. Neuman. Children in attendance will have an opportunity to join David Grover and the Big Bear Band for a sing-along, read with Curious George, and participate in arts and crafts or hands-on science activities. Families also will learn about PBS educational programs that promote early literacy. At noon, Neuman will present a workshop for teachers, Nurturing Knowledge: Learn how to put ideas into content-rich practices. Neuman will provide teachers with five essential early literacy practices: creating a supportive learning environment; shared book reading; songs, rhymes, and word play; developmental writing. Dr. Neuman will discuss how teachers can connect these practices with math, science, social studies and art so children acquire the knowledge and the skills they need for academic success.
