NEW STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT WILL REWARD GOOD BEHAVIOR
MIAMI - Miami-Dade County Public Schools recently unveiled its new Standards of Student Behavior, which will replace the older Code of Student Conduct, and will provide a positive and more strategic focus for model students.
The current code, which comes in two parts, elementary and secondary, addressed negative behavior but never corrected bad behavior, explained Dr. Pablo G. Ortiz, Principal of the new Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School and member of the new code committee.
A major change in the new code, said Ortiz, is the emphasis to identify, recognize and reward model student behavior.
Other important changes include:
- addition of clearly defined descriptions of model behavior,
- alignment of District Core Values to examples of model behavior,
- introduction of parent tips and inspirational quotes,
- incorporation of time management skills and tools, and
- development of age-appropriate activities
The main thought behind changing the code is to make sure students come to school feeling safe and secure so that they can focus all their energy on learning.
