NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS STUDENT WINS $20K SCHOLARSHIP
IN HISPANIC HERITAGE ART COMPETITION

Miami - Cathryn Garcia-Menocal, a senior and visual artist at New World School of the Arts, is the national winner of one of the most prestigious art contests in the United States, “What Hispanic Heritage and Culture Mean to Me!” sponsored by General Motors (GM) and the Latino Art Beat Organization. Garcia-Menocal, who actually was the second place winner in the local level competition in Miami, beat out top students from Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. to win the top prize.

Garcia-Menocal will receive a $20,000 scholarship for her color graphite painting, “Cuca la Curandera” (Cuca the Faith healer) to attend the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore.

Garcia-Menocal's achievements include winning the 2007 Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Scholarship, maintaining a 5.4 GPA while presiding over Amnesty International and the National Art Honor Society for two years, president/corporate watchdog of Zonta Club International for women’s rights, and chair of the “Arts in Antarctica” project with artist Javier Cortada.  She also is the “Creativity” face of the school district’s “It Takes…” marketing campaign.

Latino Art Beat is a Chicago-based, non-profit organization created in 1998 that supports Latin student artists in high schools and that organizes competitions in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Washington, D.C., and Chicago during Hispanic Heritage Month with art shows and concerts.
