191 M-DCPS TEACHERS EARN NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION
MIAMI – Earlier today the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) announced the names of 191 Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) teachers that are among nearly 7,800 teachers nationwide that have achieved National Board Certification. In early November, these teachers received notification from NBPTS that they had successfully demonstrated rigorous standards set by the NBPTS for accomplished teaching.
NBPTS has declared December 4, 2007 as National Board Certification Day and has published the names of the newly-certified NBCTs on its website, www.nbpts.org.
To achieve National Board Certification, each teacher must complete a comprehensive year-long assessment process that includes a four-part portfolio with classroom videotapes, samples of student work and documentation of the teacher’s leadership, collaboration and on-going professional learning accompanied by descriptive, analytical and reflective commentary. The teacher must also successfully demonstrate advanced content area knowledge on a six-part computer-based essay test.
In some cases, teachers repeat portions of the assessment process during the subsequent year or two years. This allows teachers to self-assess areas of needed improvement and focus their professional development on these areas in order to reach accomplished levels.
Nationally, there are more than 60,000 NBCTs. The addition of this year’s 191 new NBCTs brings to 1,122 the number of NBCTs currently employed in M-DCPS. The District will host an event during February to celebrate the achievement of these dedicated and highly accomplished teachers. The list of 2007 M-DCPS NBCTs is available online at: http://prodev.dadeschools.net/nbpts/nbpts.asp
