CREW NAMED FLORIDA SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR

The Florida Association of District School Superintendents has named Dr. Rudolph F. Crew, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Superintendent, the 2008 Florida Superintendent of the Year. He was nominated for this award by former U.S. Education Secretary Rod Paige.

“I am truly honored to receive this recognition,” said SUPERINTENDENT CREW. “It reflects the commitment of our School Board, employees, parents, community leaders, and above all, our students. It takes all of us to live up to our slogan, ‘giving our students the world,’ and we all share in this prestigious honor.”

“Under Dr. Crew’s leadership, we have made significant progress on several fronts, particularly in closing the achievement gap among different groups of students,” said School Board Chair AGUSTIN J. BARRERA.

“In 35 years as a newspaper reporter, editor and publisher, and in the past few years working fulltime in the area of ‘school readiness,’ I’ve come to know many superintendents. Dr. Crew is the best I’ve ever witnessed,” said DAVID LAWRENCE, The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation President.

“Our community is truly privileged in having such a visionary and courageous superintendent,” said M. IVELISSE CASTRO, Dade County Council PTA/PTSA President.

“Dr. Crew’s relentless work in strengthening collaboration across all sectors of the community has resulted in a new paradigm for addressing the unique issues of urban public education,” said MODESTO A. MAIDIQUE, Florida International University President.

“Dr. Crew’s commitment to ensure a quality education for children of all backgrounds is paramount and exemplified through his tireless mission to renew and strengthen the educational system in America,” said HARVE MOGUL, United Way of Miami-Dade President and CEO.

“Rudy Crew is a passionate promoter of public education, and he recognizes the challenges we face,” said ROD PAIGE. “He is a visionary who sets high standards for his schools. Since his arrival in Miami-Dade back in 2004, achievement levels have risen and the system is now viewed as a model for other districts across the nation.”
