MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL BOARD SELECTS ALBERTO M. CARVALHO
AS SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

The Miami-Dade County School Board today selected Associate Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho to lead Miami-Dade County Public Schools as Superintendent.

Mr. Carvalho began his career with Miami-Dade County Public Schools as a science teacher.  He was soon promoted to Assistant Principal, launching a long and distinguished career in administration.  He has served as the school district's Public Information Officer and as Associate Superintendent of Intergovernmental Affairs, Grants, Marketing and Community Services.

Mr. Carvalho has forged strong relationships with local governments, community organizations, and parent groups.  He is responsible for the development of ten compacts with Miami-Dade County municipalities that have helped strengthen the services the school district offers to students and the community.

As head of the District's intergovernmental relations, Mr. Carvalho has spent countless days in Tallahassee and Washington, helping to shape legislation that benefits students and their families.

Mr. Carvalho was also selected today to lead Pinellas County Schools.  He will make his decision as to which position he will accept in the days ahead, following conversations with both school districts.
