ALBERTO CARVALHO NAMED ONE OF THE NATION’S TOP 10 TECH-SAVVIEST SUPTS

MIAMI – Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho has been named one of 10 winners of the 11th Annual Tech-Savvy Superintendent Awards by the editors of eSchool News for his outstanding ed-tech leadership and vision.  Carvalho and his fellow winners will be honored at a luncheon on February 17 in Denver.

All nominees were judged on 10 “Hallmarks of Excellence,” including, “thinks creatively and strategically about the long-term challenges and opportunities of technology in the school district and in education at large.”  Carvalho more than meets each criterion.  He embraces emerging technologies and uses them on a daily basis. Whether it’s by pushing for the District’s new purchasing system, launching an initiative giving students and parents 24/7 access to digital resources, increasing virtual school enrollment by 800 percent, or creating the visually appealing, digitally rich, hybrid teacher/knowledge-facilitated instruction of the iPrep Academy high school.

“Some people look at technology in public education as an add-on or a supplement. I don’t. I actually see technology as an environment,” Carvalho said.  “So we as educators should leverage our existence in this technology-rich communication environment for the benefit of public education.”

eSchool News recognizes 10 of the nation’s top K-12 executives for their outstanding ed-tech leadership and vision. This year’s winners were chosen by the editors of eSchool News with help from last year’s winners.
