SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS, ALBERTO M. CARVALHO
NAMED
SILVER MEDALLION AWARD RECIPIENT BY MIAMI COALITION OF CHRISTIANS AND JEWS

The Miami Coalition of Christians and Jews (MCCJ) will honor Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho with its Public Service Silver Medallion Award, during its annual Humanitarian Dinner on March 3, 2012 at the Four Seasons Hotel, located at 1435 Brickell Avenue, Miami.

Since 1946, MCCJ has hosted the annual dinner honoring outstanding leaders in the community. Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho has been selected to receive a Silver Medallion because of his extraordinary contributions to the field of education as the leader of the fourth largest public school system in the United States.

“I am honored to receive this award” said Carvalho. “This really belongs to everyone in our community who continues to support the work we do for the children of Miami-Dade County.”

Under Carvalho’s leadership, Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ business operations were restructured, resulting in an increase in financial reserves of over 2,000 percent, despite the national economic downturn. He has been selected to lead statewide committees charged with charting the future of public education in Florida.  He successfully chaired the Governor's Race to the Top (RTTT) Working Group, which led to Florida's successful bid for RTTT funding resulting in $700 million for Florida’s schools. He also was tapped as chair of Florida’s Task Force on Educational Excellence, which has been charged with crafting the framework for the reform efforts driven by RTTT. Additionally, Carvalho was recognized by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce as the 2010 “Visionary Leader of the Year” award and by eSchool News as one of the Top 10 Tech-Savvy Superintendents in the U.S. in 2011.

Carvalho joins previous Silver Medallion awardees including:  Hilarie Bass, Richard D. Fain, Rev. Dr. Patrick O’Neill and Rabbi Solomon Schiff.

MCCJ is a human rights organization, advocating respect for all, working to eliminate discrimination, and helping minorities gain rights, access and a greater voice.
