SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO CARVALHO’S STATEMENT
REGARDING FLORIDA’S NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND WAIVER

Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho applauded The White House’s authorization of Florida’s No Child Left Behind (NCLB) waiver, today.

“This is a wonderful development for students, parents, and teachers throughout Florida,” Superintendent Carvalho declared.  “I commend U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Florida Commissioner of Education Gerard Robinson for advocating and submitting this waiver to the President.  The waiver provides flexibility in Adequate Yearly Progress and the way that students and schools are graded.  It also gives school districts flexibility in the way we spend funding for Supplemental Educational Services dollars, which will help us serve more children more efficiently.  This is a huge gain for our community.”

Carvalho testified before Congress regarding NCLB waivers on September 14, 2011.  His testimony can be seen at http://superintendent.dadeschools.net/index.php?news=163.  Carvalho will head to the White House tomorrow for further education talks.
