MORGRIDGE FAMILY FOUNDATION MAKES $1 MILLION DONATION IN SUPPORT OF SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY

Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho accepted a donation of $1 million from the Morgridge Family Foundation today on behalf of The Foundation for New Education Initiatives, Inc.  The funds will be used to expand wireless technology in Miami-Dade County Public Schools classrooms.

John and Carrie Morgridge visited the school district to make the presentation.  Carrie Morgridge told reporters and district staff that the donation was made as an endorsement of the District’s leadership and to provide connectivity for all students, especially those who are economically disadvantaged.

The Morgridges challenged The Foundation for New Education Initiatives, Inc. to match its donation.  Superintendent Carvalho vowed to make the match.  The Morgridge donation, combined with matching donations, is expected to qualify for federal matching funds for wireless improvements in schools for a total impact of $20 million.

Jeb Bush, former Governor of Florida and Chairman of the Foundation for Excellence in Education and the Foundation for Florida’s Future, said, “The Internet overcomes the greatest obstacle to getting a great education – geography.  The Internet gives students access to rigorous courses taught by outstanding educators  The incredibly generous support of the Morgridge Foundation will connect thousands of students to high quality digital resources and instruction, which will ensure students have the tools to achieve their God-given potential for learning.”

The Foundation for New Education Initiatives, Inc., a direct-support organization for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, aims to raise $7 million by March 20, 2012. The $7 million goal in donations will be multiplied by 10 for an ultimate yield of $70 million.
