SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT CARVALHO CHALLENGES DISTRICT’S FOOD SERVICE STAFF TO COMPETE IN FAIR’S ‘COOKING UP CHANGE’ CONTEST

Cook-off competitions have been an integral part of The FAIR for more than 25 years, and have been open to students and adults who live in Miami-Dade County. This year, Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho is challenging the District’s food service employees to create delicious and healthy school lunches for students. A panel of students will conduct the first round of judging on Wednesday, March 21, at 4 p.m. at The FAIR located at 10901 SW 24 Street, Miami, FL.  Eight semi-finalists will be chosen for a cook-off competition.

The semi-finals cook-off and selection of the Superintendent’s Challenge Grand Champion will be held on Friday, March 23 at 4 p.m. with local celebrity chefs judging and selecting four finalists. The final cook-off will be held on Thursday, March 29 at 5 p.m. The winning recipe will be featured on the District’s menu in the fall.

The Healthy Schools Campaign launched Cooking up Change in Chicago in 2007 to engage student chefs and the broader community in a dialogue about school food reform and the need for more federal resources for the nation’s school meal program.
