SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS ALBERTO M. CARVALHO TO ADDRESS IMMIGRATION, LANGUAGE ISSUES IN LIVE WEBCAST TODAY

MIAMI - Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho will address immigration and language issues in a keynote speech at the 2012 TESOL International Convention and English Language Expo in Philadelphia tonight beginning at 5:30 p.m.  The webcast can be seen at http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/livenow?id=7129670.

Carvalho was chosen to deliver the keynote speech because of his advocacy for high-quality education, starting in the classroom as a science teacher, and through his outstanding leadership as superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools - the fourth largest school system in the nation. Under Carvalho’s direction, Miami-Dade had its highest high school graduation rate ever in 2010 and saw students consistently outperforming their national peers on the 2009 National Assessment for Educational Progress. He has testified before Congress on numerous occasions on behalf of educational issues.  The Miami-Dade school district must deal with 91 percent of children from minority families, more than 50 percent of families who are foreign born and about 75 percent of them that speak a language other than English at home.

TESOL International Association annually hosts more than 6,500 people from across the U.S. and around the world at its convention.  TESOL is a professional community of educators, researchers, administrators and students committed to advancing excellence in English language teaching for speakers of other languages worldwide. Educators at all levels attend to find a productive exchange of ideas and information and to feel the embrace of a dynamic professional community.
