THREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS RECEIVE ANNENBERG GRANT

MIAMI - When the students of Nathan B. Young, Arcola Lake, and Robert B. Ingram elementary schools return to school this fall, they will have new equipment and stimulating materials to enhance classroom instruction and student learning. This is possible thanks to the generosity of the Leonore Annenberg School Fund for Children, which awarded each school grants totaling $208,000. The schools were all nominated by the Council for Educational Change, which not only assisted with the writing of the grant, but will also serve as the fiscal agent and provide assistance with implementation.

Working with its partner organization in Florida to identify school candidates, the Leonore Annenberg School Fund for Children awards several grants each year to schools that serve student populations where at least 90 percent of the students qualify for the federal government’s free/reduced price lunch program.  The projects also must impact every student in the school and provide immediate value and usefulness.  At Robert B. Ingram and Nathan B. Young elementary schools, technology will provide an exciting new focus for math and science and expose students to new learning opportunities. At Arcola Lake, students will benefit from a powerful focus on literacy, both in the classroom and in the school’s media center.

Currently, the Fund awards grants to schools in New York City, Houston, South Florida, Chattanooga, and high poverty rural areas in America. The three schools in Florida are making their grant-funded purchases now so that the projects will be ready for use on the first day of the 2012 – 2013 school year.

The Leonore Annenberg School Fund for Children was funded by the late philanthropist Leonore Annenberg in her capacity as a trustee of the Annenberg Foundation.  The School Fund is now a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.  The Fund does not accept unsolicited requests for support.
