MIAMI BEACH PRINCIPAL SELECTED AS ‘FLORIDA PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR’

Dr. Rosann P. Sidener, principal at Miami Beach Senior High School has been selected as the 2012 Florida Association of School Administrators' (FASA) Principal of the Year. Sidener will represent Florida in the 2013 Metlife/NASSP National Principal of the Year competition on June 13.

Sidener, an 18-year veteran educator with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, has served as principal of Miami Beach Senior High School for the last five years. Under her leadership, Miami Beach High has increased both its school accountability grade: from a ‘D’ in 2007 to an ‘A’ in 2011, and its graduation rate: from 63 percent to 75 percent.

Sidener said in her application: "I wanted to ensure that the school community worked together to develop active governance structures that would provide systems and procedures for gathering, analyzing and leveraging data as well as developing policies to guide school improvement efforts."

To overcome recent budget challenges, Sidener has partnered with many local businesses and agencies to provide students with greater resources and opportunities such as internships and field experiences.

The Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA) is a statewide umbrella association representing nearly 11,000 education administrators throughout Florida.  It serves and supports the professional goals of Florida’s education administrators. The MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year program began in 1993 as a means to recognize outstanding middle level and high school principals. The program annually honors secondary school principals who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students as well as demonstrating exemplary contributions to the profession.
