WHY: |
“Sak Pase: A Teenager’s guide to Culture” is a book about Haitian culture produced by North Miami Middle School’s Museum Magnet 8th-grade students, many of whom were displaced from Haiti after the devastating earthquake in 2010. The book will be unveiled at the school’s exhibition night. The book consists of pictures, student illustrations and narratives that compare and contrast the culture of Liberia Africa with Haiti’s culture in relation to food, language, dress, celebration and festivals. It was produced in collaboration with the Haitian Heritage Museum and bookmaking consultant Lea Nickless.
Funding for the project was made possible through a grant from the Institution of Museum and Library Services, Adopt a Classroom, Miami Dade County Cultural Affairs Department, and Target.
