M-DCPS TO EXPAND FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROGRAM DUE
TO POPULAR DEMAND

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will expand its Extended Foreign Language (EFL) Program in many elementary schools starting in the 2012-2013 school year. Students will be able to receive instruction in English and  a second language as part of this project.

As a result of this initiative, instructional time in the target language will be doubled from 30 minutes per day to a minimum of one hour per day. The expanded EFL model was inspired by parental interest. Both parental and principal committees (Parent Subcommittee on District and School Budget Priorities and Principals’ Committee on the School Allocation Plan)  unanimously supported the initiative.

There is a great demand for additional EFL programs in the District, and there are waiting lists for admissions into the programs at schools such as North Beach Elementary School and Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center.   The new plan will allow all Kindergarten and first grade students in schools that follow the EFL model the opportunity for instruction in another language for a minimum of one hour per day.
