SCHOOL BOARD UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES
SUPERINTENDENT CARVALHO’S TENTATIVE BUDGET

MIAMI – The School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida unanimously approved Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho’s proposed tentative budget and millage rate during its monthly meeting Wednesday.

The proposed $3.749 billion budget includes a tax rate of $7.998 for every $1,000 of assessed property value, a reduction from last year’s tax rate. The plan protects teachers, the classroom, school spending, services for students with disabilities, parental choice options, and the district’s credit ratings. It also reduces the property tax rate for Miami-Dade County home owners and protects the district’s reserves. The budget does not impose furlough days, lay off teachers, or reduce vital programs such as the arts, music, and bilingual and physical education.

“Having benefited from significant stakeholder input from parents, teachers and private sector individuals, this is a ‘Best-in-Class’ budget that will meet the needs of our students and school district” said Superintendent Carvalho.

Speakers representing the P.T.A., labor and the business community spoke at the meeting lending their support to the proposed tentative budget for Fiscal Year 2012-2013.
