31 MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVE IMPROVED PERFORMANCE GRADES

Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho has been informed by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) that 31 Miami-Dade County public schools have received better school performance grades than originally reported.  The improved grades are a result of Level 1 and Level 2 students who made more than a year’s growth and were not credited with the full learning gains points possible. These additional points were not incorporated in the FLDOE’s original calculations.  Inclusion of learning gains for students in Level 1 and Level 2 who made more than a year’s growth was the recommendation of a task force in which Miami-Dade participated.

  • Schools that improved from B to A:  Ruben Dario Middle, Sylvania Heights Elementary, Seminole Elementary, Peskoe K-8, Olinda Elementary, Miami Springs Elementary, Melrose Elementary, West Hialeah Gardens Elementary, Howard Drive Elementary, Chapman Elementary, Downtown Miami Charter, Keysgate Charter High and International Studies Charter  Middle
  • Schools that improved from C to B:  Richmond Heights Middle, Country Club Middle, Nautilus Middle, Lake Stevens Middle, W. Homestead Elementary, Riverside Elementary, Benjamin Franklin K-8, Campbell Drive K-8, and Aspira Charter
  • Schools that improved from D to C:  North Dade Middle, Horace Mann Middle, Jose de Diego Middle, Cutler Ridge Middle, Hibiscus Elementary, Florida City Elementary, Citrus Grove Elementary
  • Schools that improved from F to D: Allapattah Middle and Florida International Academy.

Learning gains made by Level 1 and Level 2 students, which were not figured into the original school grades had a negative impact particularly on middle schools in Miami-Dade and across the state.

Miami-Dade will be reviewing the grades for all schools once the appeals process begins to ensure that the FLDOE’s calculations are accurate.
