SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO M. CARVALHO WELCOMED STUDENTS
ON FIRST DAY OF CLASS

Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho welcomed students to a new school year at several locations today.

The Superintendent started his day at the Transportation Facility East that houses some of the district’s 255 new buses, which are equipped with air conditioning and seatbelts and cut fuel consumption in half.

He then visited Barbara Goleman Senior High School.  The school is home to the AP | Cambridge Capstone Program, a partnership of the College Board, Cambridge University and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The rigorous new program combines the in-depth subject matter offered through AP courses and exams with the interdisciplinary global seminar curricula and the assessment of research projects and presentations offered by University of Cambridge International Examinations.

Next, he travelled to the new North Dade Middle School/ North Dade Center for Modern Languages Elementary School. The brand new facility opened on time and within budget, two years after the old facility was closed due to safety concerns. Superintendent Carvalho served breakfast to students and their parents.   Breakfast is available free of charge each day to Miami-Dade students.

He then visited Miami Springs Senior High School, home of the iTech program, which offers a sequence of courses to prepare students for careers such as Game/Simulation Designer, Game Programmer, and Game Software Developer in the Information technology career cluster.

The Superintendent also visited Miami Senior High School, which has served alumni including noted educators, athletes, movie stars and elected officials. Miami’s flagship high school is undergoing extensive remodeling to preserve and honor its rich heritage.
