HIGHLAND OAKS MIDDLE SCHOOL ALUMNA IS FINALIST IN
PRESTIGIOUS SCIENCE COMPETITION

Nicole Odzer is one of 30 finalists in the 2012 prestigious Broadcom MASTERS Competition. She is the only South Florida participant. Odzer qualified with her project titled, Can Reef-Building Corals Adapt to the Stress of Global Warming? The Effect of Global Warming and PAR on Coral Bleaching in Montastrea cavernosa, while she attended Highland Oaks Middle School.

The Broadcom MASTERS Competition selected 30 middle school finalists from across the nation who demonstrated outstanding science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills. The finalists will compete in a rigorous competition to test their STEM abilities.

The finalists receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. and will compete for $40,000 in cash prizes. The top award is the $25,000 Samueli Foundation Award followed by the second place prize of $10,000, and third prize of $5,000. Other prizes include the opportunity to attend STEM-focused summer camps and the world’s largest international high school science fair. The competition will take place on October 2.

The competition is sponsored by the Broadcom Foundation, which is a non-profit public benefit organization funded by the Broadcom Corporations. The Broadcom MASTERS is a Society for Science & the Public program.
