GREATER FLORIDA CONSORTIUM OF SCHOOL BOARDS HOLDS ANNUAL MEETING TO DRAFT THEIR 2013 LEGISLATIVE PROGRAM

MIAMI – The Greater Florida Consortium of School Boards held their annual meeting in Miami last week to draft their 2013 Legislative Program for the upcoming Florida Legislative Session which will officially begin on March of next year, with committee meetings starting as early as next month.

The Consortium met in order to develop the major themes of concern to the eleven school districts it represents and which account for 40 percent of the students and 50 percent of the legislators statewide.

The meeting dealt with issues such as school funding formulas; local discretionary millage; hurricane/disaster relief to assist school districts with major hurricane damage; the class size constitutional mandate; voucher programs and charter schools provisions; workforce development and teacher evaluations; accountability and state testing program; and rules related to governance.

“The goal of this meeting was to find common ground with ten other school districts from Florida whose needs and concerns are similar to those of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and come together to influence the policy makers of our state for the benefit of our students, parents, and teachers,” said Consortium President Lawrence Feldman.
