ACADEMY OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM AT MIAMI BEACH HIGH, LOEWS MIAMI BEACH HOTEL CELEBRATE 20-YEAR PARTNERSHIP

The Loews Miami Beach Hotel recently recognized its partnership with Miami Beach High School’s Academy of Hospitality and Tourism (AOHT) by honoring the many program graduates who are currently employed at its hotel.

The collaboration between business and education has been very successful in developing young professionals for the Hospitality & Tourism industry, one of seven targeted industries for growth under the One Community One Goal Initiative.  The work-based learning component of the program begins with career exploration and culminates with an internship during the summer after the junior year.

The Loews has partnered with the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism since the program’s inception at Miami Beach Senior High School with Dr. Lupe Ferran Diaz, now Director, School Choice & Parental Options, followed by the current Lead Teacher of the Academy, Patricia Gregory.

Sixteen current or former Miami Beach students have been employed at the Loews, commencing with the 1997 graduation class until this year. Graduates’ jobs range from career entry-level positions such as pool concierge to management positions in housekeeping, conference management, reservations and sales.

The National Academy Foundation (NAF) is a national network of career academies to support the development of America’s youth toward personal and professional success in high school, higher education and throughout their careers.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools, under the auspices of School Choice & Parental Options, has 48 NAF programs in 25 senior high schools that encompass the career themes of Finance, Hospitality and Tourism, Information Technology, Engineering and Health Sciences.

For additional information about the AOHT program at Miami Beach High School, contact Patricia Gregory, Lead Teacher, at pgregory@dadeschools.net.
