NORWOOD ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL RECEIVES $25,000
MILKEN EDUCATOR AWARD

Dr. Kevin Williams, principal at Norwood Elementary School, did not know he was being honored with the Milken Educator Award from the Milken Foundation last week during an event at the school. So when his name was called out to receive a $25,000 check, he was in total shock.

The Milken Educator Awards were created in 1985 by education reform leader Lowell Milken to celebrate, elevate and activate excellence in the profession. They are referred to as the “Oscars of Teaching” by Teacher Magazine.

To date, more than 2,500 K-12 teachers, principals and specialists from coast-to-coast have been honored with more than $63 million in awards. Dr. Williams is a product of Miami-Dade and began his teaching career in 1998 as a math teacher at Norwood Elementary School. He returned in 2010 to take on his current role as principal, using a hands-on approach to empower teachers and mentor students.  His focus on student achievement and professional development for teachers fosters a culture of excellence that last year led to the highest school grading score ever achieved at Norwood Elementary.
