M-DCPS STUDENT WINS NATIONAL TALENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Arts Schools Network (ASN) recently announced the winners of its On Your Way talent recognition program, which recognizes talented students in grades 9-12. Students are honored in the categories of classical voice, filmmaking, musical theater and visual arts.

Mateo Nava, a senior at Design & Architecture Senior High School (DASH), was the recipient in the visual arts category. He impressed the judges with an outstanding portfolio, which demonstrated his excellence in multiple media and approaches to art as well as his innovation, technical skill and documentation.

The winner of each category will receive a scholarship for further training and one-on-one advice from college and conservatory representatives. The students' work will be showcased on the ASN website and in other e-communications. A video montage of the student work is being compiled and will be released in January. Also, eligible On Your Way winners automatically bypass the preliminary round of the national YoungArts program. YoungArts is the exclusive nominating agency for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts, the country's highest honor for high school seniors.

To participate in ASN's On Your Way, students applied online and uploaded media files. Their work was judged by individuals from prestigious colleges and conservatories. All participants in the program benefited through valuable exposure to the judges, who provided constructive feedback about their work, and by creating online portfolios, the new mode for submitting student work and school admission applications.
