M-DCPS SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS CARVALHO FINALIST FOR NATIONAL SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho was named one of four finalists for the prestigious national Superintendent of the Year by The School Superintendents Association (AASA).

“This honor reflects the work of thousands of employees across the school district. Our educators give their all everyday for the common goal of student achievement,” said Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho.

Mr. Carvalho was recognized for remarkable gains in student achievement. Miami-Dade placed among the highest-achieving school districts nationally in 4th and 8th grade reading and mathematics on the National Assessment for Educational Progress. Graduation rates increased to 77.2 percent; surpassing the state both in rate of growth and total graduation rate. The school district was placed on the 4th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to AP® course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams.

The other finalists include Terry Grier, Houston Independent School District, Houston, Texas; Kevin Maxwell, Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Annapolis, Maryland and Michele Taylor, Calhoun City Schools, Calhoun, Georgia.

The AASA National Superintendent of the Year program is open to all U.S. superintendents who plan to continue in the profession. The program also honors Canadian and International School superintendents. The applicants were measured against the following criteria: leadership for learning, communication, professionalism and community involvement.

A $10,000 college scholarship will be presented in the name of the 2014 AASA National Superintendent of the Year to a student in the high school from which the superintendent graduated, or the school now serving the same area.

Co-sponsored by Aramark Education, VALIC and AASA, the 2014 National Superintendent of the Year will be announced during AASA’s National Conference on Education, which is being held on Feb. 13-15, 2014, in Nashville, Tenn.
