M-DCPS STUDENTS FIRST TO PARTICIPATE IN
YOUTH FAIR’S ELIE WIESEL PRIZE IN ETHICS ESSAY CONTEST

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Youth Fair & Exposition is proud to be the financial supporter of the first Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics essay contest open to high school juniors and seniors across the nation. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is the first district to have its juniors and seniors participate.

Like the national contest open to university students, the new high school contest will address the same mission: encourage students to apply Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel’s call to action to “think higher, feel deeper” about urgent ethical issues confronting them in today’s world.

The essay contest opened in January. Presentation of awards will take place the second week in March.  Winners must show proof of college or university registration to claim their prize money. Essays will be judged by Superintendent of Miami-Dade’s public schools Alberto M. Carvalho, Nobel Prize winner Dr. Elie Wiesel, and founder and CEO of Legal Research Network (LRN) Dov Seidman. The winners will receive a combined $7,000 in prize money. First Place: $3,000; Second Place: $2,000; Third Place: $1,000, and $250 each to four runners up.

The endeavor is a partnership between The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, LRN, the foundation’s exclusive corporate partner for the annual college-level ethics essay contest, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair & Exposition, Inc., and The Betsy Hotel – South Beach.

Dr. Eliezer "Elie" Wiesel KBE is a Romanian-born Jewish-American professor and political activist. He is the author of 57 books, including “Night,” a work based on his experiences as a prisoner in the Auschwitz, Buna, and Buchenwald concentration camps. Mr. Wiesel won the Nobel Prize in 1986.

Dov Siedman, whose life’s work is to promote ethical leadership among our next generations, is the author of “HOW: Why HOW We Do Anything Means Everything.” He is the founder and CEO of LRN, a consulting firm on corporate culture, ethical behavior and leadership, and he has advanced degrees in philosophy and law from the University of California, Los Angeles, Oxford University and Harvard Law School.

The Youth Fair’s contribution to fund the Elie Wiesel Ethics Essay Contest is an extension of its annual distribution of more than $300,000 in college scholarships, cash premiums and awards to local public, private, charter and home school students. To date, the Youth Fair has awarded more than $10 million to Miami-Dade students to help them achieve higher education.

The Youth Fair is the only venue in Miami-Dade County where students can showcase their educational, fine arts and science achievements all in one place and be rewarded for their efforts. More than 40,000 student projects are exhibited annually to more than half a million families, friends and fairgoers.
