MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AFSCME REACH AGREEMENT

Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) reached an agreement on Friday, Jan. 17th, that addresses the impact of health insurance deductions on employees while negotiations remain ongoing.

"I am very pleased that administration and AFSCME leadership have been able to come to an agreement which preserves our ability to continue negotiations while reducing the costs of health insurance to employees. This agreement is further evidence of the importance that we as a district place on the dignity of all of our employees," said Miami-Dade School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman.

The agreement allows all AFSCME employees to be temporarily enrolled in the 2014 OAP 20 health insurance plan at the new lower rates, effective January 1, 2014. Additionally, on January 24th, employees will see an adjustment to their paychecks which represents the difference between the new lower health insurance premiums and those reflected in their January 10, 2014, paycheck.  This agreement provides the District with the ability to invest its healthcare subsidy to mitigate premium increases and provide reimbursement to impacted employees.

Negotiations will continue in the coming weeks.
