***MEDIA ADVISORY*** SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO CARVALHO’S ACHIEVERS, COLLEGE-BOUND HOMELESS STUDENTS FROM PROJECT UP-START Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho will be presenting ten recent graduates with scholarships, money and laptops during a special ceremony to take place Wednesday, August 6th at 1pm at the School Board building. These college-bound students have excelled despite hardships with the help of Project UP-START - a Miami-Dade County Public Schools program created to help the thousands of homeless students in our school system. Superintendent Carvalho – who many years ago experienced homelessness – will be awarding each student a $1,000 check for their post-secondary tuition costs, with prize funds received from AASA’s National Superintendent of the Year award. He will also be matching this scholarship with an additional $1,000 donation for each student to help with college expenses such as supplies, clothing and food. Each scholarship recipient will also be receiving a Hewlett-Packard laptop computer. While these graduates prepare for college, other high school students will be getting ready to begin a new school year with the help of the UP-START Store, which provides school supplies and other necessities to homeless students.
Project UP-START seeks to ensure a successful educational experience for homeless children and youth in South Florida by collaborating with parents, schools, and community through opening the doors to academic opportunities, removing barriers, and promoting a healthy sense of self with hope for bright tomorrows.
