PONCE DE LEON MIDDLE STUDENT AUTHORS LAUNCH ANTHOLOGY OF THEIR OWN WORKS, ‘PONCE REVIEW’ WITH A READING AT BOOKS & BOOKS

Ever wonder what goes on inside the head of a middle schooler? A group of students from Ponce de Leon Middle School are willing to give us a glimpse by putting their thoughts on paper and publishing their own anthology titled, “The Ponce Review.”  Fifty students read from their opus last Sunday during a launch party at one of the most well respected independent bookstores in the country, Books & Books - Coral Gables.

Amid a backdrop of hardcover novels by world famous, prolific authors, the Ponce kids read before a packed audience from their poems pondering “selfies” to essays about a time when a trip to grandpa’s house meant visiting a “mafia” neighborhood inhabited by residents who’d plan for quick getaways. In the poem, “Lovember,” one student considers the chaos, the “kissy, cheesy faces, clasped hands” of middle school life, while another interviews his mother about being held at gunpoint by police during the 2001 uprising in Argentina.

Novelist and columnist Carl Hiaasen wrote the Review’s foreword: “For everyone who writes, the fun is in the choices to be made - the language you use, the characters you create, the plots you invent.  And, as the selections in this anthology demonstrate, the possibilities are endless and exciting.”

Copies of the review are available with cash only for $10 through the Ponce PTSA or via email to Ponce de Leon Middle Principal Martha Chang, mchang1@dadeschools.net.
