FPL SOLAR INSTALLATION DEDICATED AT MIAMI JACKSON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Event Underscores the Importance of Bringing Hands-On, Clean Energy Science
Learning Opportunities to Public Schools

Miami – (Sept. 5, 2014) – From its humble beginnings in the 1800s as a log cabin to a 21st-century campus featuring modern facilities that cater to the needs of an evolving, increasingly culturally diverse student body, Miami Jackson Senior High School is focused on providing dynamic learning opportunities for the next generation.

Adding to the hands-on, innovative dynamic for the school’s more than 1,500 students is a new solar panel array installed by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) in one of the campus’s courtyards. Capable of generating 10 kilowatt-hours of power when the sun is shining, or enough to power two classrooms, the solar panels are part of a hands-on program that allows students at Miami Jackson to learn about energy.

On hand to dedicate the solar array were Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho; School Board Vice Chair Dr. Lawrence S. Feldman; Miami Jackson Senior High School Principal Carlos Rios; and FPL’s Vice President of Customer Service, Marlene Santos along with other community leaders, teachers, students and parents.

“I started out my teaching career at Miami Jackson Senior High School, and it’s exciting to know that we have these resources to provide students with hands-on dynamic experiences to learn about complex subjects such as the science of solar energy,” said Carvalho.

“At FPL, we strive to be innovative in what we offer our customers and the communities we serve while maintaining our commitment to delivering consistent value day in and day out,” said Santos. “We continue to work on smart, economical ways to increase the amount of solar energy we use to power our customers, and we are proud to support the next generation with advanced education opportunities like this.”

Through FPL’s Solar for Schools initiative, a total of 11 Miami-Dade County schools will have working solar arrays by the end of 2014 as well as structured lesson plans, which are provided to teachers who have completed special training. Students get a first-hand view of energy technologies, and integrating the real-time data supplied by the solar systems into everyday classes help students learn about how electricity works.

Schools that feature or will feature FPL solar arrays by year’s end include:

Solar system operational as of August 2014
* Solar system to be installed by end of 2014

FPL’s system of power plants, ranked among the cleanest in the U.S., includes three large-scale solar energy centers. For more information on FPL’s solar programs, please visit: http://www.fpl.com/solar.
