SUPERINTENDENT/FPL INTRODUCE NEW TOOL FOR PRINCIPALS TO MANAGE ENERGY USE, REISSUES “SUPERINTENDENT’S ENERGY CHALLENGE”

WHAT:

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) Vice President of Customer Service Marlene Santos will introduce a new, smart tool for managing energy use and meeting the “Superintendent’s Energy Challenge.”

WHEN:

Friday, Mar. 21, 2014
3 – 4 p.m.

WHERE:

Miami Senior High School
Media Center
2450 S.W. 1st Street
Miami, FL, 33135

WHY:

The “Superintendent’s Energy Challenge” provides a financial incentive to top schools in the district that reduce their energy use. By using FPL’s new Energy Dashboard for businesses, more than 400 M-DCPS principals and administrators will be able to see their school’s energy use and identify ways to conserve energy and lower their electric bill. The “Superintendent’s Energy Challenge” awards the principal 75 cents for every dollar his or her school saves in energy expenditures. The award funds go to the school’s discretionary fund. Superintendent Carvalho launched the energy-saving program at the beginning of the 2009-10 school year, and is elevating the challenge by using the Energy Dashboard tool to help principals learn more about their energy use and identify opportunities for savings.

FPL has upgraded the electric grid to be smarter and more reliable for its 4.7 million customers throughout the state.  With a smarter grid came a smarter tool for customers. The Energy Dashboard enables school administrators and principals to see their individual school’s energy use by the month, day, hour and, in some cases, 15-minute intervals. With the Energy Dashboard, a school can:

    • Forecast and budget its energy use
    • Understand variables affecting its bill - and act on them
    • More easily identify savings associated with efficiency upgrades and equipment improvements
    • Understand how temperature and humidity affects energy use and bills
    • And much more
