MIAMI SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL SHINES AT REDEDICATION CEREMONY

Celebrities and alumni, principals and teachers, students, elected officials and local residents were among the invited guests for the April 11 rededication of Miami Senior High School, following the complete restoration, along with building additions, of Miami’s flagship senior high school.

The most ambitious plan ever undertaken by the Miami-Dade School Board was begun in 2005 with a planned total project budget of $135M over a four-year funding period.  The economic crisis of 2008 forced a reassessment of the project, and under the administration of Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, a multi-phase, four-year construction plan was launched in October 2009 with a construction contract awarded for $49.8M.  Work was completed on schedule and within the School Board-approved budget of $54.8M, which included a 10 percent contingency fund for unforeseen conditions.

The new Miami Senior High contains a theater (auditorium) with new seating, sound system and restored chandeliers; a restored media center with carefully refurbished ornamental steel trusses that were unseen for nearly 50 years; a resplendent historic gymnasium, nicknamed the “Asylum”, complete with air conditioning; and 1,000 new student stations and renovated state-of-the-art facilities with interactive technology for future generations.

Miami High has been honored nationally in academics, athletics and the arts and many prominent alumni have been of benefit to our community.  Guests were invited to retrace the restoration through educational workshops and school tours, and to attend a rededication ceremony in the school’s theater.
