***MEDIA ADVISORY***

M-DCPS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TEST THEIR AERODYNAMIC DESIGNS IN
FIU WALL OF WIND CHALLENGE

WHO:

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) high school students, teachers and Florida International University’s (FIU) International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC)

WHAT:

2014 Wall of Wind Mitigation Challenge

WHEN:

Wednesday, May 21, 2014 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.: Testing of the building models
12:30 p.m.:  Awards ceremony

WHERE:

FIU Engineering & Computing Center
10555 West Flagler Street
Miami, FL 33174
(located on the corner of Flagler Street and Southwest 107th Avenue)

WHY:

Teams of M-DCPS high school students have been challenged to improve a building’s aerodynamic performance.  Their building models will be tested by FIU's Wall of Wind during the 2014 Wall of Wind Mitigation Challenge.  Wind engineering judges will evaluate the performance of each building model as they are tested by wind generated by the real 12-Fan Wall of Wind.  The students’ building models will demonstrate the importance of designing against the forces created by hurricane winds, resulting in more hurricane resistant buildings and less property damage.
