MIAMI-DADE LEADS STATE IN MATHEMATICS AND IMPROVES IN READING ACROSS THE DISTRICT FOR THIRD GRADE FCAT 2.0 SCORES

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) outperformed the state in Mathematics and continued to show steady progress in Reading district wide, according to Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) 2.0 Grade 3 information released today.  The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) praised the District’s improvements in a press release.

In Mathematics, the District’s third grade students continued to lead across the state, with 62 percent of M-DCPS students scoring 3 or above, as compared to 58 percent statewide. M-DCPS’ third grade students also outperformed other large districts in the state on FCAT 2.0 Mathematics.

Overall, the District’s third grade students’ performance on FCAT 2.0 Reading improved, with 56 percent scoring Level 3 or above in 2014 as compared to 53 percent in 2013. While the percentage of students’ scoring high in the M-DCPS increased from 2013 to 2014, the state remained the same in Reading.

“Our students have demonstrated solid success in Mathematics and a stable performance in Reading, despite the challenges faced by our diverse student body, many of whom are English language learners,” said Miami-Dade Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “We are aware of the challenges that lie ahead and will continue to offer opportunities for improvement to all of our students.”

FCAT 2.0 Writing results were also released by FLDOE today, with 8th grade students exhibiting the most progress. M-DCPS 8th grade students’ FCAT 2.0 Writing scores increased in 2014, with the percent scoring 3.5 or above reaching 53 percent in 2014, up from 49 percent in 2013. The level of improvement for students in grade eight was twice that seen statewide. In addition, M-DCPS 4th and 10th grade students scored on par with their counterparts statewide.
