TWO M-DCPS STUDENTS AWARDED BARBARA SENIORS HARKINS FOUNDATON EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS Two Miami-Dade County Public Schools students were named recipients of the 2014 Barbara Seniors Harkins Educational Scholarship awarded to outstanding students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) – District Six, who are beginning their freshman year of college. Eligible students must be going into their first year of college. Selection criteria include, academic performance, letters of recommendation, and a short essay. The judges reviewed 20 applications and chose the following recipients: Ponce Jones, a graduate of Homestead Senior High’s Medical Academy of Science and Technology, is attending Florida A&M University; and Charmahan Webbe, a graduate of Miami Carol City Senior High, is attending Lynn University in Boca Raton. They each received a $500 award. Dr. Barbara Harkins was a life-long M-DCPS educator who believed in the power of teaching all children. The foundation in her name was established in 2005 by Elisia Harkins-James to help underprivileged children in the South Dade County area of Florida.
