M-DCPS’ OEO CERTIFIES 400TH LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS

Miami-Dade County Public School’s (M-DCPS) Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) announced that it recently certified a landmark 400 local small businesses. The office began certifying firms in April 2013.

“Small businesses are the life blood of our local economy,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho.  “I am proud that M-DCPS continues to place a major priority on the economic development and growth of our small businesses.”

The OEO increased its outreach efforts and communication techniques with community organizations, business owners and other civic groups.  In conjunction with the District’s Facilities and Procurement departments, OEO launched the creation of Quarterly Contracting Plans, a new initiative to keep the public informed about upcoming contracting opportunities. This initiative encouraged interest in doing business with M-DCPS. In addition, three brand new strategic alliances with the NAACP Miami-Dade Branch, Hispanic Business Initiative Fund and the Florida Small Business Development Center Network, increased outreach efforts in the community.

“Today represents a major milestone for Miami-Dade County Public Schools,” said Brian Williams, Economic Development Officer.  “Our office is committed to certifying local firms and promoting real contractual opportunities to help them grow and expand.”

The OEO promotes the economic development and growth of Small, Micro and Minority businesses through its certification program, community outreach programs, contract review and monitoring activities.  The OEO strives to ensure that local Small, Micro and Minority businesses have the maximum opportunity to do business with the Miami-Dade County School Board and to provide equal opportunity for all segments of the contracting community.
